Tank!: 40 Hours of Battle, August 1944
An amazing book that conveys the raw feelings of a crewman of a tank in WWII. The style of writing is very personal and reflects his thoughts and feelings before, during and after the action. I challenge you to read this book and not be unmoved by the prose. It feels like you are in the tank with him!
There are some books that just stop you in your tracks. This is most certainly one of them. For anyone with an interest in tank warfare, this is a marvellous read. For any Tank or Armoured Corps soldiers, this should be a compulsory read. Never have I felt a stronger bond or connection with an author. As an Armoured Corps soldier, I feel as though Mr Tout is talking directly to me. He uses a universal soldiers language and I'm yet to meet another Tank or Cavalry soldier who's read the book and could disagree with it being anything less than remarkable.
I felt as though I was there in the turret with him, the excitement and fear as real as can be. And I also felt part of his immense sadness moments later that came when he had to check his mates dead bodies and mourn their loss.
Ken Touts book is truly a wonder and I'm immensely grateful that he wrote it.
Do yourself a favour and don't just read this book, savour it. The emotions, the honesty, the action and the humour make it something very, very special.
